Flower Hair Bow

Guest Writer: Amy Hamblin

If you have daughters you know how popular flowers in the hair are at the current time.  Well, I am sorry, but for me all the fake flowers are so expensive that I might as well go buy a clip rather than make one myself.  Since I am cheap, I found a good alternative:  I make the flowers out of fabric.  It is easy enough that my daughter can make them too, so it was fun for us to have this project to do together.

Here’s how:

Cut five or six 3” squares depending on how many petals you want the flowers to have.

Fold the square in half diagonally making a triangle.

Fold that triangle in half again to make a smaller triangle.

Fold like an accordion starting from the middle out to the corners to make a petal.  This is the trickiest part…especially for the kids.
Put a needle with thread through all the layers of the accordion folds.

Repeat steps 1-5 until you have the desired amount of petals, threading the needle through each pedal to connect them all, as you go.
After you finish the last petal take your needle back through the first petal to form a round flower shape.  Manipulate the fabric until you have the desired look and then tie off the thread and cut it.
Using hot glue mount a button right in the center covering up any fabric ends.

Flip the flower over and glue on a crocodile clip. (tip: these are way cheaper at a hair store than at a fabric store)  You can really use any clip you want but my daughter prefers the crocodile clip because they are easy to put in and take out.

I love doing crafts with my kids.  It makes me feel like a good Mom and it makes them proud of their piece of art.  It is also time together well spent!

  1. Good idea. They can have a different flower for each outfit; and if you sew you can use the scraps from making a dress to make a flower for their hair.
