A Tribute To Those Gone On

The melody of "Taps" is such a haunting and humbling tune that it puts a lump in my throat almost every time I hear it. It is only a few simple notes, but sometimes less is more. I have never really known the words to this simple melody until now, so I would like to share them. They, like their melodic counterpart, are simple and beautiful.

Day is done, gone the sun
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky
All is well, safely rest
God is near.

Fading light dims the sight
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright
From afar, drawing near
Falls the night.

Thanks and praise for our days
Neath the sun, neath the stars, neath the sky
As we go, this we know
God is near.

As you enjoy this three day weekend, please remember the reason that you have that extra day off. There are so many who have given their lives for us to have the rights, privileges and comfortable lives that we have today.

It is the VETERAN,
not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN,
not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the VETERAN,
not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN,
not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN,
not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN,
not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.

Happy Memorial Day!!
