Family Is Thicker Than Blood

It has been a whirlwind of a week. I am home now, and I have my mom home, safe and sound, as well. With this recent passing of my Uncle, my family has dominated my thoughts. I find myself in remembrance of all those members who have passed on before me. We have all heard the adage "Blood is thicker than water". I would like to rephrase that to say "Family is thicker than blood".

Two of the people, amongst a list, who have been on my mind lately are my grandpa Macklin (pictured with me) and Aaron's grandpa Paul. The significance behind these two men were they weren't our real grandpa's, they were both "Step-Grandparents": no blood relation what so ever. However, when Aaron and I look back on our lives, these two men have more of an impact than the men they stepped in to replace. We loved our grandpa's very much and miss them often.

You do not have to have a blood tie to someone to make them family: family is a much stronger unit than blood. I watch my brother and sister-in-law with their adopted girls and this just confirms my point. Those girls will grow up knowing they are adopted and that Weldon and Julie are not their "real" parents in the blood sense, but their family is as strong as those of us who gave birth to our children. They love their children just as fiercely as I love mine and their children will never love anyone else like they do them: they are a family.

Family is the most important thing we have in our lives, it is different for each one of us, but the importance is the same. Put your family on the top of your priority list: mend fences, strengthen relationships and stay close..... it's that important.

  1. Yes I agree, family is what life is about. I can't imagine my life without the close relationships I have with my brothers and sisters and getting all up in their business and things like that. Sometimes it makes me mad that our family knows a play by play of my life, but a lot of times, I just think of it and laugh. I kind of like it when I tell something to one person and a soon enough someone else in the family is calling me about it.
And yes, it is hard to imagine that I did not give birth to Jade and Audrey because they are so much a part of me.
